Sam LaPorta Discusses Potential Exit from Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta expressed frustration over the lack of progress in contract extension talks, hinting at a possible departure from the team in 2027. In a recent interview on Barstool’s ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast, LaPorta commented on his future with the Lions, stating, ‘I’m going to continue to do my thing and ball out, and in three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good. I’ll go get paid somewhere else. So whatever.’

LaPorta is in the final season of his rookie contract and will be a free agent next year. He indicated some dissatisfaction, recalling his season-ending back injury in 2025 and his performance this season. ‘I think the combination of getting your heartstrings twisted as well as the violent sport that we play, it sucks,’ LaPorta said. He also mentioned, ‘Like last year, whatever it was, Week 9, Week 10, I break my f—ing back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love.’
